Astro Cats
Hailing from the Seattle/Tacoma area, the Astro Cats band merges the styles of two great frontmen, blending the superb and inspiring modern indie rock style of guitarist/vocalist Billy Shew with the highly regarded roots based blues guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and vocals of Brian Lee. The Astro Cats rhythm section features the incredibly talented Hank Yanda on bass and vocals, and the remarkably versatile and superbly polished Charlie “Mac” McDowell on drums. Adding additional spice and soul to the front line is the amazing Angelo Guerrero on Soprano, Alto, and Tenor Sax.
The Astro Cats repertoire features Billy’s original modern indie rock songs, Brian’s original roots oriented songs, and a carefully honed selection of rock and roots cover tunes to create a unique sound that is broad in musical range while being strongly cohesive and inspiring throughout.
Originally founded in 2007 by drummer Charlie McDowell, The Astro Cats membership and direction brings together players and from two well known northwest bands to form a new, unique sound. Billy and Brian each continue to front independent bands which are widely recognized in their respective styles: The Billy Shew Band and Brian Lee & the Orbiters. The Astro Cats blends membership of these bands to create a new creative direction that is differentiated not only from the Shew Band and the Orbiters, but also from other bands on the northwest music scene. The Astro Cats sound is widely varied and distinctive. In addition to great original tunes, familiar cover tunes take on a whole new sound.
Brian and Billy’s guitar styles and Angelo’s reeds create strong contrast and variety to keep the sound fresh at every turn. Hank and Charlie are delightful in their deft rhythmic sensibility on everything from hard-driving rockers to light, peppy rhumbas. With this incredibly crisp rhythm section, you can’t go wrong!
Rock, blues, country, and jazz all have entwined histories and The Astro Cats integrate these influences in a distinctive way within each song. Billy’s influences such as Dave Mathews, John Mayer, John Denver, and Jimi Hendrix, interweave with Brian’s influences of T-Bone Walker, Elmore James, Little Walter, etc..Add major influences such as Cream, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, MitchRyder and the Detroit Wheels, Sam and Dave, Led Zeppelin and BB King on the part of Charlie, Angelo, and Hank, and a broad musical spectrum is well represented within the sound of the Astro Cats
